  • 01

    MISTAKE #1: Thinking "More Cardio = More Results"

    Don’t get me wrong, cardio exercise isn't 100% bad. But, like anything, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. In fact, inside the 21-Day Metabolic Reset, I’ll show you what I think is the more effective way to do cardio.

    What I think you should avoid if you want to see results fast is: Long, boring cardio.

    Unless you really enjoy long cardio (or you’re training for a running event or something like that), long cardio is NOT the fastest way to get results.

    There’s a TON I don’t like about long cardio workouts:

    • Cardio increases the stress hormone cortisol like crazy 🤪 (this can throw all sorts of fat-burning hormones out of balance!)
    • Cardio turns your hunger hormones up to 10, leaving you hangry and more likely to overeat. 👿
    • It’s repetitive, so it’s easier to get injured.
    • And (what I think is the worst part): “Fat burning” cardio (aka: Steady Cardio) doesn’t even really burn fat until you’ve been doing it for 90+ minutes.

    There’s a time and a place for cardio and there’s a way to do your cardio workouts that will blast off fat like nobody’s business but…you have to do A LOT of long cardio to even get close to your body’s fat burning mode.

    So, if your goal is to see results fast?

    You might want to avoid long, boring cardio.

  • 02

    MISTAKE #2: Avoiding "Strength Training"

    When you start your 21-Day Metabolic Reset, I’m going to ask you to pick up a pair of dumbbells and lift.

    It’s “strength training” or resistance training.

    This part is important: I am NOT asking you to get big and bulky like a bodybuilder.

    What we’re going to do is get strong.

    A common question I hear often is: “Hey Susan, How do I speed up my metabolism?”

    Lots of people think the answer is more long cardio or longer workouts.

    But that’s TOTALLY not the case.

    My answer: Get strong.

    Getting strong increases your Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR (that’s how many calories you burn at rest) because muscle burns calories at rest.

    I’m not saying you have to be ripped like a bodybuilder. All we’re talking about is adding just a little bit of firm muscle tone distributed all over your body.

    Just a little bit of muscle will help burn up more calories all the time (in fact, adding just 2-4 lbs of muscle can boost RMR by about 8%....for the average person, that’s about 144 extra calories burned per day!).

    That muscle will help you get firm everywhere (not big and bulky) and it will increase RMR (that’s resting metabolic rate).

    Moral of the story? Just a little bit of muscle can help crank up the burn by quite a bit (and you won’t get bulky)! So, don’t avoid strength training!

  • 03

    MISTAKE #3: Doing the Wrong Exercises

    Lots of workouts use “isolated moves” like bicep curls, leg extensions or tricep kickbacks to help you get lean and strong. Other workouts use “lengthening” moves that stretch your muscles like yoga.

    These types of exercises are NOT the most efficient way to add strength and burn more calories fast.

    The key to turning on “afterburn” with your workouts is: Intensity.

    The most effective way to increase intensity is to use full body compound movements that involve multiple large muscle groups.

    Simply put, you want to be doing exercises that work more than one muscle group at the same time.

    PLUS: Studies have found that resistance exercises (like the ones we’ll do with dumbbells) performed with high intensity can produce an even greater afterburn effect compared to HIIT cardio alone.     MISTAKE #4: Working Out at the Wrong Intensity

    Our body works best in 2 intensities: HIGH and LOW

    You want to avoid the “in-between” (like steady cardio at a moderate intensity).

    If you’ve ever tried HIIT workouts but you don’t have much to show for all of your effort, you may have been caught in this “in-between.”

    It’s easy for HIIT workouts with the wrong intensity and improper rest periods to fall into this zone and leave you tired, out of energy, and no more in shape than when you started!

    When you’re doing HIIT workouts properly, you have to exercise at the proper intensity.

    I see so many “HIIT” workout classes at gyms that are 45 minutes or 60 minutes long and every time I see them I think to myself: “If you workout with the proper high intensity, there is absolutely no way you can exercise that long!”

    A proper HIIT workout can only be around 20-25 minutes at the most and that usually includes warm-up time too.

    And remember how I mentioned that most HIIT workouts were made for the way men respond to workouts? That means that even if you are doing HIIT workouts, there’s a good chance that you’re still working out at the wrong intensity!

I started the Metabolic Reset in early May and have been loving the workouts and accountability since then. I am feeling stronger and am slowly starting to see some changes in my body (I would see more if I dialled in the macros, but I'm just not there yet - it has been a busy summer of working full time and managing most things at home while my spouse is dealing with a debilitating neck/upper back injury). Last week, I went on a 5-day backpacking trip in Algonquin Provincial Park, here in Ontario. I was THRILLED with how strong I felt! It was hot and humid (high 30sC with the humidity) and there some tough days of hiking but I felt totally prepared! My friend (who is also a very fit and active woman) made me go up the hills first because (to quote her) "You go first cause you go so fast... How are you doing that?!?!" To which, I replied "I think those workouts I've been doing since May are paying off!!". HAHA!

Second, I can do push ups on my toes - 5 in a row, to be precise!! I can't remember the last time I could do push ups on my toes! I keep showing off this skill to my family (and any friends who want to see! HAHA!). My next fitness goal is a pull up - I have no idea when I will be able to do that, but I will start to work my way there.

Third, I'm going to start rock climbing. My kids are serious rock climbers and I never join them at the gym cause I have felt too heavy and never felt strong enough or in good enough shape... A month ago, I told them that I would start joining them on the bouldering wall in September and they are so excited to teach me to climb... :)

Hello everyone! I’m day 6 of Burn360 (I started on a Tuesday) and I’ve got to say that I’m enjoying every element of it! It’s just what I was looking for at this juncture in my life. I’m a very active person and I’m used to doing regular exercise (resistance training, Pilates and daily hill walks with the dog) but I’m peri menopausal and the weight had gradually crept up before lockdown started, really over the last 12 months. Susan, I have to brag on your program a little. I've been doing some physical therapy for neck pain, and had my final appointment today. Love how the shape of my body is changing

I'm 43 and have been doing Bikram yoga for the past 11 years with time off here and there (to have baby then to try to get pregnant again). Thought I would never try anything new again until COVID stay at home orders happened. I used to workout at the gym 2 hours/day, 4-6 days a week in my 20s. Bikram yoga took close to 3hrs/day,4-6 days a week (1.5 hr class, travel time, shower there). Time I'll never get back:( Another downside -1 was consistently injuring myself because of my flexibility and tendency to push/overdo it.

I didn’t believe it, so I redid the measurement 3 times...

I just finished the first week. Yes, that is the most sore and painful my thighs and flutes have ever been. Yesterday I did the cardio on my rowing machine, because I couldn’t face the cardio exercises again quite yet! But I got a good workout and the timer thing worked quite well.

This morning (rest day!), I woke up and all of a sudden my legs felt only a tiny bit sore, and I actually felt like I had muscles in them! So I took out the tape measure which told me that I had lost an inch on my hips and half an inch on my waist. I didn’t believe it, so I redid the measurement 3 times.

Looking forward to starting week 2 tomorrow! And loving feeling the strength in my legs again!

I can already feel the tightness on my legs and butt!

Just did my first workout. Wow! It was easy to follow but not as easy to do, even with my years of working out in the gym, lifting and using a stationary bike, with the heaviest of resistance for 30 minutes, and even having run several marathons back in the day. It just goes to show you that those workouts I did were missing some of my muscles. I've always done a kind of circuit training with no rest between reps and fairly heavy weights, but doing the combo as it is in this program is new to me, as I would generally work on one set of muscles, then another, generally alternating between various upper, core and leg exercises.. I had done the moves separately each before, but not combined into a full body routine in one move. I was locked out of my gym due to the virus and became more sedentary in the past 6 months than I've ever been in my life, so this program will be perfect for me to restart my passion for being fit! I can already feel the tightness on my legs and butt, which is great! I plan on adding additional weight lifting in a little while as I really enjoy that and want to regain my upper body definition more, but these workouts are sure to achieve the butt and legs I've always wanted and never quite got even when I was 89 lbs and mostly muscle. People used to think I took supplements, but it was my gluten and grain free, modified paleo eating that did it along with 4 hour workouts (3 hours entire body weight lifting and 1 hour on the treadmill running. I don't have that kind of time anymore so getting better and faster and more desired results will be awesome! I am 5 ft 3 inches and getting closer to 50 now about 140 lbs which is the heaviest I've ever been So looking forward to seeing and feeling results! And after the first day I can literally see my thighs being tighter!

Listen, it doesn't matter if you've never worked out a day in your life or if you used to be super fit and have let yourself go. Knee injuries are so common that I've included modifications and substitutes for exercises that might otherwise irritate your knees. That usually does the trick, but ultimately it depends on the extent of your knee problems.

That said, I’ve had many clients with knee problems that have not only been able to complete the program successfully, but have found that the program actually helped strengthen their knees and reduced their knee pain as a result.

I love when that happens!

Back problems can be complicated with a huge range of variables to consider. If your doctor has given you the green light to exercise, there are a few things you should consider before starting Burn360, e.g. How bad is your back problem? How long have you had it and how active are you?

The type and severity of your back problem will determine whether or not you can do the workouts. Burn360 is based on short, high-intensity workouts that utilize full-body exercises using both your own bodyweight as well as dumbbells. The exercises include fundamental movements such as squatting, lunging, overhead press-ups, etc… If any of these movements cause pain and discomfort to your back, I wouldn’t recommend the program right now.

If you suffer from sciatica, which is a radiating pain or numbness and tingling down your glutes and legs (usually on one side) you should not participate in the program until the sciatica is gone.

If your back problem is chronic in nature, but is manageable, you should be able to do the program. However, I would recommend starting slow and easy to see how your back feels as you progress with the program. As you get more comfortable with the workouts, you can gradually increase your intensity and effort level in accordance with the health of your back.

Here's some good news: Burn360 can actually be helpful in improving back problems. In my experience, people with moderate to chronic back problems have benefited greatly since the program helps them strengthen their low back while increasing the range of motion (flexibility) of their hips. Improving hip mobility significantly helps alleviate back problems.

Back problems considered more severe (like herniated discs) can also improve from strengthening the back. Strengthening the back is achieved by performing the functional exercises you'll do in Burn360. These types of exercises strengthen the core muscles that surround your spine, protecting it from excessive motion that can put stress on the discs of your back joints.

Also...consider how sedentary you've been since injuring your back. Lack of exercise and movement can oftentimes make your back problems worse (or even be the source of the problem!). Being sedentary for a long period of time leads to loss of core muscle strength, which makes you more susceptible to back injuries. If this is the case, it would be best to start out doing activities and movements that are less strenuous and intense to get your back and body in better shape before starting Burn360.

There’s no such thing as being too old! Burn360 is based on the principle that fitness is based on intensity rather than duration (quality over quantity). So, being able to give your best effort is the key to getting the most out of the program, no matter your age.

The great thing about intensity is that it can be increased or decreased based on your current fitness level. Even though your 100% effort may not be the same as someone who's younger, the positive effects are the same. That means by doing the program to the best of your abilities, you’ll be able to burn more fat and increase your fitness level - no matter your age.

I'm in my 40's and I have clients in their 50's, 60's, and 70’s who are doing the program and loving it! The most important thing to keep in mind that all workouts and exercises scalable -- from the exercises, load, rest intervals and speed -- it can all be easily adjusted to your current fitness level so you can do the program safely and at your own pace. Strategic rest intervals are built into the 21-Day Metabolic Reset workout schedule so that you can maximize your results.

These rest intervals are spaced right where you need them so that you can take a break, feel your body recover, and prepare yourself for the next stage of the workout challenge.

There are six total workouts per week (all 20-25 minutes)...

Each week, there are three high-intensity resistance workouts (using dumbbells), all different every week, nothing repeated. These are all high-intensity, full-body workouts using combination exercises that work multiple muscle groups at the same time to burn fat and build lean muscle (i.e. raise your metabolism!)

There are two HIIT cardio workouts per week. There are two sets of workouts for you to choose from here. One set is for if you have NO equipment. The other set is for if you will be using a cardio machine (e.g. treadmill, bike, rower, etc...). Interval timers are all setup for you as well (no special software required).

There is one Active Recovery day and one Rest day each week.

Cardio equipment is optional. Sometimes I like to use cardio equipment (like a treadmill) for our “HIIT Cardio” workouts, but all you really need is a pair of running shoes and a place where you can get outside and move your feet!

HIIT Cardio workouts are a type of interval cardio workout that cranks up calorie burn in a short amount of time. They work so well because of their ability to turn on post-workout afterburn for accelerated fat burning after your workout is over. After a HIIT Cardio workout, your body can burn extra calories for up to 2 days after your workout is over!

These workouts require some sort of cardio activity - running, biking, the elliptical, a rowing machine - there are even alternate HIIT Cardio workouts in the program that use bodyweight only exercises. I was experiencing achy joints - when I found this program - I told myself "it's time to do something about your achy joints AND get back in shape".
